Summer Road Trip Safety Tips For Drivers Exploring Bucks County & Beyond

Highway Safety News, TMA News | June 2nd, 2026

As summer travel season gets underway, the TMA Bucks Community Traffic Safety Program is encouraging residents and visitors to make safety the top priority before heading out on road trips across Bucks County and beyond.

From scenic drives along River Road to weekend getaways at county and state parks, America 250 events, festivals, and other tourist destinations, summer will likely bring increased traffic to local roadways. Our Community Traffic Safety Program reminds motorists that preparation, patience, and responsible driving can help prevent crashes and keep everyone safe.

“Summer is one of the busiest travel times of the year, especially as visitors travel throughout our region for America 250 celebrations and major special events in Philadelphia,” said TMA Bucks executive director Stephen J. Noll. “Whether families are exploring Bucks County attractions, heading into the city for special events, or taking longer road trips, simple safety steps behind the wheel can make a major difference in keeping everyone safe. When possible, we also encourage travelers to consider using SEPTA public transportation options and the Share-A-Ride app to help reduce congestion and make travel easier during busy events.”

The TMA Bucks Community Traffic Safety Program recommends the following summer driving safety tips:

  • Plan ahead: Check your route, traffic conditions, and weather forecast before leaving. Allow extra travel time during weekends and holidays. Use the 511PA app which provides real-time, hands-free traffic advisories for major Pennsylvania roadways.
  • Check your vehicle: Inspect tires, brakes, lights, windshield wipers, and fluid levels before starting a trip to help avoid breakdowns.
  • Avoid distracted driving: Put phones away and focus on the road. Texting, scrolling, or using apps while driving can take attention away at critical moments.
  • Never drive impaired: Always designate a sober driver or arrange alternate transportation if alcohol or other impairing substances are involved.
  • Wear seatbelts: Make sure every passenger is properly buckled up, including children in age-appropriate car seats or booster seats.
  • Take breaks on long trips: Fatigue can impair reaction time. Drivers should stop regularly to stretch, hydrate, and rest during extended travel.
  • Watch for pedestrians and cyclists: Summer brings more outdoor activity throughout Bucks County communities. Stay alert in all areas, parks, and trail crossings.
  • Slow down in congested areas: Increased traffic near shopping districts, recreation areas, and construction zones requires extra caution and reduced speeds.

Our Community Traffic Safety Program also reminds drivers to also share the road respectfully with motorcyclists, bicyclists, pedestrians, and emergency responders throughout the busy summer season.
